Euthanasia

A humane option for cats in their final stage of life performed with the utmost compassion.

Euthanasia of a beloved cat is a very emotional thing to go through. There are times when we are able to prepare ourselves for the process, then there are times when we are faced with the decision unexpectedly. Our team members are always here to help you understand the process and discuss any questions you may have regarding the procedure.

When should I consider euthanasia?

Humane euthanasia is a gift that we can offer our pets to end their suffering. Quality of life is a question of determining and deciding how we can better the future for our pets and assessing this is an ongoing process. Solutions such as pain medication, dietary changes, or procedures, may offer a temporary solution for your pet’s discomfort. As pet owners, we know our pets better than anyone else. We are their advocates and when it comes time to make this difficult decision we can help you through the process.

What happens during euthanasia?

Pets are often sedated prior to the euthanasia solution injection to ease the process and ensure comfort for the pet, as well as you as an owner. The euthanasia solution used is a barbiturate called sodium pentobarbital, which causes unconsciousness and a cessation in respiratory, as well as cardiac function. This injection is given intravenously and is generally very peaceful.

Do you do house calls?

No, we do not offer house call services.

Can you stay with your cat during euthanasia?

You are welcome to stay for as much of the procedure that you are comfortable with, everyone is different and we understand that. Some may feel comfortable only staying until the pet is sedated, others stay for the whole process. We have a quiet room available for you to spend as much time as you wish with your pet before, during and after the procedure. Our compassionate team members will explain every step of the process and accommodate you with whatever you are comfortable with.

What is the cost of euthanasia?

Please call our clinic and speak to one of our team members regarding options and cost. There are a number of options available to you as far as a private cremation service and ceramic paw print keepsakes. One of our team members will be happy to discuss your options and the cost involved.

Do you offer pet bereavement support service?

Our team members are always available to talk, however, we do not have a team member trained in bereavement counselling. We do have information on counselling services and bereavement groups in our area and we will be happy to supply you with contacts to them.
