Recently, a few of my clients have asked me if essential oil diffusers are safe for use around dogs and cats.
Cats are more sensitive to essential oils than dogs. Most essential oils are safe. However, lavender oil should be avoided. It can oxidize in the air and can promote the development of allergies (skin and respiratory).
Avoid tea tree oil as dogs and cats can get a significant dose of it if breathed in over a long period of time. Tea tree oil is toxic to dogs and cats if ingested or absorbed through the skin and can cause neurological signs.
Overall, diffusers are safe to use around dogs and cats if used sparingly.
